This line linked to the Llanidloes and Newtown Railway and opened fully in 1861.

1864 The 4 lines between Whitchurch and Machynlleth were merged to form Cambrian Railways - this brought together the Oswestry and Newtown Railway, the Oswestry, Ellesmere and Whitchurch Railway, the Llanidloes and Newtown Railway and the Newtown and Machynlleth Railway.
