"SIDNEY WHITFIELD BRAY was associated with the gas and chemical side of mechanical engineering throughout his career.
He was born in 1881 abnd received his practical training as an apprentice with Messrs. R. and J. Dempster, Ltd., gas and chemical engineers, of Manchester, from 1896 to 1902, in whose employment he continued for a further sixteen years. After passing through the successive stages of journeyman, fitter, and outside foreman he was finally made outside technical representative with responsibility for the construction of hydrogen plant and the conduct of contractors' guarantee trials.
In 1919 he joined the British Oxygen Company, Ltd. at Stratford, London, and was actively engaged for that firm up to the time of his death, which occurred on 4th January 1947.
In the earlier part of this long period, her was responsible, as engineer in charge of the gas factory, for the output of machinery and acted as inspector of gas cylinders for the Mannesman and Chesterfield Tube Companies. He was also clerk of the works at Bootle and Manchester.
More recently he had been works superintendent at Derby. Mr Bray was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1926.
