Mr. SAVAGE, after an apprenticeship with Messrs. C. D. Holmes, Ltd., Hull, spent two years in the workshops of Rose Brothers, of Gainsborough, and D. Napier and Sons, of Acton Vale.
In 1908 he accepted a position with Priestman Brothers, to supervise a night shift in their works. When this ceased he entered their drawing office, remaining until 1912. In 1912 he became a draughtsman in the excavator department of Ruston-Proctor, Ltd., later Ruston and Hornsby, Ltd., in which he was appointed Technical Manager (Excavators).
In 1930 the excavator business of Ruston and Hornsby, in conjunction with the Bucyrus-Erie Company of South Milwaukee, became a separate company: Ruston-Bucyrus, Ltd. He was appointed chief engineer and in 1941 was made a director, and still holds both these positions.
