John Manning was born in 1830 near Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, and in June 1846 was apprenticed to Messrs. W. and J. Galloway, of Knott Mill Iron Works, Manchester.
After having completed his term of five years' service, he entered into partnership with Mr. Headly, of the Eagle Foundry and Iron Works, Cambridge, with whom he remained until 1858.
In 1859 he became a partner with Mr. C. W. Wardle and Mr. A. Campbell in the Boyne Engine Works, Leeds, where he continued until his decease on 31st March 1874 at the age of 44.
He became a Member of the Institution in 1859.
