He was born in Kidderminster in 1867 and received his technical education at Masons College and the Midland Institute, Birmingham, and later at the [[University of Liverpool]]. From 1884 to 1889 he served his apprenticeship in the works of [[James Watt and Co]], at Soho Foundry, Birmingham. After further experience as a draughtsman in the works of the [[BSA|Birmingham Small Arms and Metal Company]], he went to Liverpool, and joined the [[Allan Royal Mail Steam Ship Co]], and subsequently sailed as a marine engineer in that company's liners. He later became a marine engineer in [[Alfred Holt and Co|Messrs. Alfred Holt's]] steamships. From 1893 to 1895 he was employed as a draughtsman in the repair shops of the [[Allan Steam Ship Co]], and in 1896 he accepted the position of manager to [[Ransome and Marshall|Messrs.
