1934 Elected High Sheriff of Surrey
1934 Launched the Surrey Fund to enable the people of Surrey to help the people of Jarrow.
1935 Acquired the White Star line Olympic for breaking up at Barrow, reselling her to a Sheffield firm (T. W. Ward) for this purpose. The Surrey Fund paid half of the cost of dredging the Tyne to enable the Olympic to be brought alongside Palmer's yard.
