Sydney Jessop (1809-1871) of William Jessop and Sons

Born 27 Nov 1809 in Sheffield, youngest son of William Jessop (steel maker) and his wife Rebecca nee Taylor.[1]

1831 Entered into partnership with his father and his three brothers, Montague, Thomas and Henry as William Jessop and Sons.

1845 Partner with his brothers Thomas Jessop and Henry Jessop in the firm of William Jessop and Sons, steel manufacturers of Sheffield.[2] Thomas ran the works in Sheffield, Sydney the branch in Dale Street, Manchester and Henry the branch in USA.

1861 Sydney Jessop, Park Steel Works, Sheffield, elected a member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.[3]. Of note is that one of his seconders was C William Siemens. He resigned his membership in 1865.[4]

1871 Sydney Jessop died on 16 Jan 1871 at his residence, Shakspere Street[sic], Ardwick, Manchester, aged 61. Steel merchant, Dale Street, of the firm of William Jessop and Sons, Sheffield.[5]

Death of Sidney Jessop, Esq. — We regret to announce the decease of Mr. Sidney [sic] Jessop, of the eminent steel-making firm of William Jessop and Sons, and younger brother of Alderman Thomas Jessop. This event took place at Mr. Jessop's Manchester residence yesterday morning. He had been for some time in indifferent health, but the end came somewhat suddenly. He was sixty-one years of age. Mr. Jessop was of an extremely retiring disposition, and never took much part in public affairs — none latterly — though for several years he represented the Park Ward in the Town Council, during which period he declined an invitation to become Mayor. He was of a very liberal disposition, and was greatly respected by the workmen of the firm, the eminence of which was no doubt greatly maintained by his thorough practical knowledge of the process of steel making, for as a youth he went through it all. Mr. Jessop was never married. Sheffield Independent - 17 Jan 1871
