"EDGAR CLARENCE WEST, who was born in 1890, was educated at the East London College, now Queen Mary's College, and gained his first practical experience with [[Eley Brothers|Eley Brothers, Ltd]]., London. After two years as junior draughtsman to [[Hutchings Patents|Hutchings Patents, Ltd]]., he secured an appointment in 1909 as draughtsman and designer to the [[Lightfoot Refrigeration Co|Lightfoot Refrigeration Company, Ltd]]., where he remained for eight years. He was then engaged as a designer-draughtsman and stress calculator in connection with an air-cooled aero-engine and for a period was in practice as a consultant. After renewing his association with the [[Lightfoot Refrigeration Co]] as engineer and representative he went into business on his own account in 1923 as a mechanical engineer and machine designer and was closely concerned with a variety of experimental machines. More recently his activities included those of a consulting engineer. Mr. West had been an Associate Member of the Institution since 1940. He was also a Member and past chairman of the [[Junior Institution of Engineers]] which awarded him the Vickers Gold Medal with Prize and the Dunn Silver Medal for papers read before the members.
