ALFRED PALLY MARKS was born at Long Ditton, Surrey, on 23rd July 1870.
He was educated at Cranleigh.
From November 1887 to December 1891 be served his apprenticeship at Messrs. Wigham Richardson's Works, Newcastle-on-Tyne, and left that firm in 1891 to take up a three years' course of engineering at University College, London.
He next had four months at sea as engineer on s.s. "Cadiz," of Messrs. John Hall, Jun., Line, London.
From 1894 to 1895 he was with Messrs. Barry and Higham as draughtsman; from 1897-99 with the Patent Nut and Bolt Co., Ltd., as engineer-draughtsman, and in 1900 with Messrs. Edwin Dunks and Co., Ltd., boiler makers, Oldbury, as assistant manager.
In 1901 Mr. Marks became assistant manager to the Forward Engineering Co., Ltd., Birmingham, and in 1903 works manager to the same firm (Kynoch's Ltd.).
In the following year he started on his own account as consulting engineer in Corporation Street, Birmingham, specializing in structural steelwork, and was responsible for the design of numerous large buildings, not only in and around Birmingham and the near counties, but also in London.
He died at Harborne, Birmingham, on 12th October 1914, at the age of forty-four. Mr. Marks was a nephew of the late Henry Stacy Marks, R.A., and a photographer of no mean repute.
He was elected a Graduate of this Institution in 1892, and an Associate Member in 1903.
