"CHAUNCEY HUGH SUMNER, Wh.Ex., in the course of his career filled a variety of posts as draughtsman and designer.
He was born in 1881 and served his time at the Stratford works of the Great Eastern Railway, from 1898 to 1903, obtaining a Whitworth Exhibition in the following year. He continued in the service of the railway company until 1915 when he became attached to the Ministry of Munitions, rising from junior to senior draughtsman with responsibility for the design of gun ammunition on a mass production scale.
In 1918 he took charge of the drawing office for Messrs. Gillett and Johnson, Ltd., Croydon, clock makers and bell founders, and was chiefly concerned with the design of steel structural work.
