HEREWARD IRENIUS BRACKENBURY, C.B.E., was for ten years managing director of the Heaton works, Newcastle upon Tyne, of Messrs. C. A. Parsons and Company, Ltd. He was born in 1871 and was educated at Dover College. In 1886 he entered the Elswick works of Sir W. G. Armstrong, Whitworth and Company, Ltd., where he served a three years' apprenticeship. After holding various junior posts, he was made a departmental manager in 1901.
Subsequently he became general manager of the gun carriage and tank department, which during the War produced 13,000 guns and 12,000 carriages, and in 1917 Mr. Brackenbury received the C.B.E. for his services, and the Order of the Rising Sun of Japan, Fourth Class. He took up his appointment with Messrs. Parsons after the War, and occupied this position until he retired in 1928. He was also a director of the Newcastle and District Electric Lighting Company, and of Messrs. R. and W. Hawthorn, Leslie and Company, Ltd., St. Peter's Works, Newcastle upon Tyne.
Mr. Brackenbury was actively interested in questions of standardization, and served on the Committee on Screw Threads and Limit Gauges of the British Standards Institution from its inception. In 1910 he presented a paper on "High-Speed Tools and Machines to Fit Them" at a joint meeting of the Institution and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, held in Birmingham. Earlier, in 1902, he had acted as honorary local secretary during the Summer Meeting of the Institution in Newcastle upon Tyne, a duty which his son, Mr. C. H. Brackenbury, fulfilled when the Institution again held its Summer Meeting there in 1925.
Mr. Brackenbury lived at Berwick on Tweed in his retirement, and his death occurred there on 17th September 1938. He had been a Member of the Institution since 1907.
