HAROLD HEAPE was born on December 21, 1896, and was educated at Burton Grammar School.
Mr. Heape enlisted in May 1915 as a private in the Royal Fusiliers, transferred to the Royal Engineers, and drafted to France in September of the same year. He was gassed, and later slightly wounded. After passing through all ranks, Mr. Heape was granted a commission in the Notts and Derby Regiment.
On demobilization, Mr. Heape proceeded to Birmingham University, where he graduated B.Sc. (Met.) in 1921, and M.Sc. in 1923.
