- c. 1857 Alfred Baldwin (1841-1908), at the age of sixteen, became a partner in the main family firm, Baldwin, Son and Co of Stourport[1].
- By the 1860s Baldwin, Son and Co was a relatively large firm, making ironwork of all kinds, plus worsted spinning mills at Stourport, a carpet manufactory at Bridgnorth, and a tin-plate works at Wolverhampton[2].
- In the 1860s the family business was split, with Alfred assisting in running the operations of E. P. and W. Baldwin Ltd at the Wilden forge[3].
