1838 Advert: 'TO ENGINEERS OR MILLWRIGHTS. ELIGIBLE OPENING. TO LET, the PHOENIX ENGINE-WORK , LEITH.
These commodious and central Premises, near YARD-HEADS, LEITH , sometime occupied by the late T. H. GUTZMER (Possibly Anthony Henry Gutzmer - Ed), Engineer , consisting of a suitable Yard , large Smith's Shop , Millwright, Pattern and Finishing Shops , Brass and Boiler Furnaces , Counting-Room , &c , are now to be Let
The Tenant may have at a valuation the whole fixed and large Machinery on the premises , consisting of a large Planing Machine , a Punching or Paring Machine , Turning and Boring Lathes , Four-Horse Engine , by which the same are wrought, Smiths' Forges , &c . &c . If more suitable to the Tenant, these articles may be let with the premises .
The premises are calculated and fitted up for carrying on an extensive business in Engineering and Machine and Boiler Making in all their branches, and the Machinery, &c., is in complete working order , and of the best description . The premises are well adapted for carrying on business , and admirably situated for the large and daily increasing Steam-boat Work of the port of Leith ....' [1]
