James Francis Tennant (1829–1915), army officer and astronomer

1855 Became a fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society

1867 Proposed to use the 1868 solar eclipse as an opportunity to identify the nature of solar eruptions. In consultation with others, including William Huggins, George Gabriel Stokes, and Warren De La Rue, he organized an observing programme.

1868 His team determined that the solar corona shines by reflected light. Made observations in India. Lt. John Herschel (son of Sir John Herschel) led the second official British expedition, at an inland site at Jamkandi

1869 Tennant was elected a fellow of the Royal Society.
