Arthur Stanley

Sir Arthur Stanley, GCVO, GBE, CB (18 Nov 1869 – 4 Nov 1947) was a British Conservative politician.

Born Arthur Stanley, he was the third son of Frederick Stanley, Lord Stanley (later 16th Earl of Derby) and travelled to Canada with his father on the latter's appointment as Governor General of Canada in 1888, becoming an ice hockey player and a member of the Rideau Hall Rebels.

The family returned to England in 1893 and Stanley was elected as Member of Parliament (MP) for Ormskirk in 1898, a position he held until 1918.

Is an attache in the Diplomatic Service; clerk in the Foreign Office; private secretary to Mr. Balfour; third secretary Diplomatic Service in Cairo. Is a thorough sportsman and an active politician. Clubs: White's, Bachelors', St. James's, A.C.G.B. & I.

He was also Chairman of the Royal Automobile Club (RAC) from 1905–1936 and Treasurer of St Thomas' Hospital from 1917–1943.

He had been knighted for his services in 1917 and died, unmarried, in 1947.

STANLEY, THE HON. ARTHUR, M.P.- Educated at Wellington, Mr. Stanley is the Conservative member for the Ormskirk division of S.W. Lancashire since 1898. He was private secretary to the Right Hon. A. J. Balfour in 1892, and has been in the Diplomatic Service. His principal pastimes outside automobilism are shooting and cricket. He has had several cars, including a Seppollet and a Locomobile. At present he drives a Georges Richard, and for town work has just purchased one of the City and Suburban electric broughams.
