Promoted by the Brandling brothers (R. W. Brandling and John Brandling) it opened from Redheugh to Gateshead Quay in 1839.

In 1844 George Hudson bought the company and merged it with the Newcastle and Darlington Junction Railway [1]

A skew bridge over the High Street, Gateshead was designed by architects John and Benjamin Green[2]
