1918 Obituary

Born at Bath in 1833, was taken by his parents to Canada as a boy, and on his return to England later, he assisted Mr Cubitt in the piercing of the Shakespeare Tunnel at Dover for the South Eastern Railway. In 1859 he went to India, and was engaged in the construction of a portion of the Central Indian Railway. Returning once more to England, he was concerned with the building of lighthouses, including the new Wolf and the Longships Lighthouse at Land's End. Subsequently he served for ten years in the Imperial Chinese Customs, under Mr Robert Hart, but retired from that position more than thirty years ago. He was for many years one of the honorary librarians of Canterbury Cathedral.
