RICHARD WILSON FINLAYSON was born at Dundee on 5th April 1851.
After receiving a general education, he was apprenticed in 1866 to Messrs. Robertson and Orchar, Wallace Foundry, Dundee, for five years, and on its termination worked as a journeyman for a short time.
He subsequently served from 1871 to 1873 in the works of Messrs. Fairbairn, Kennedy, and Naylor, at Leeds.
In 1873 he was appointed chief mechanic to the Barrow Flax and Jute Co.'s mills at Barrow-in-Furness, and on leaving there in 1875 he was for three years managing mechanic at Messrs. William Oxley and Co.'s Engineering Works in Manchester.
In 1878 he went to Sydney, New South Wales, where he was engaged by Messrs. D. and W. Robertson, Engineers, of Sydney, in erecting exhibits at the International Exhibition held in that city in 1879.
On the termination of his engagement he became editor of the "Australian Engineering Journal," until 1881, when he joined the firm of Messrs. H. P. Gregory and Co., engineers and machinery merchants, with whom he was associated as partner until his death.
He was principally engaged with saw-milling and pumping machines, and had a high reputation in that line.
His death took place on 27th December 1906, in his fifty-sixth year.
He became a Member of this Institution in 1902, and was for many years a Member of Council of the Engineering Association of New South Wales.
