In 1935 entered Buying Office of Furniture Manufacturing Co., and in two years became works manager of factory with forty employees. GARDNER, Alfred Thomas Goldie, Lt.-Col., O.B.E., M.C., M.I.M.I. Director and Secretary, Milne & Russell Ltd., 1, Brighton Road, South Croydon, Surrey. Born Woodford Green, Essex, 31st May, 1892. Educated at Uppingham School. Started business career in a broker's office in Ceylon in 1910, and in 1913 was engaged in Forestry in Burma. Joined the Royal Artillery as a 2/Lt. on outbreak of 1914 war. Was mentioned in despatches by Field Marshal Sir John French in 1915 and in the following year awarded the Military Cross and promoted to rank of Major. Wounded in 1917 and left Army in 1922 with Hon. rank of Major. In 1926 joined his present firm as a Director. In October 1939 rejoined R.A. as 2/Lt. and was promoted to rank of Major in the same month. In 1942 received Staff Appointment as Deputy Chief Instructor in M.T. at R.A. Mechanical Traction School, and was promoted to Lieut-Col. In 1944 was appointed to Field Marshal Montgomery's Staff at 21 Army Group and served overseas with them until demobilised in 1945. Is extremely well-known for his achievements in Motor Racing having established 116 records including 35 International ones. Many of these records were made with the same M.G. super-charged engine using 6, 4, 3 and 2 cylinders to conform with varying capacity limits.' Has won thrice the B.R.D.C. special Gold Star. Is Member of the U.S. British Comrades Fellowship, and a Life Member of the R.A.C. and the A.A. Is Vice-President of the British Racing Drivers' Club, and the Disabled Drivers' Club. Is a Life Member of the British Automobile Racing Club, and a Member of the Brighton and Hove Motor Club, the United Motor Sports Club, and the Roadfarers' Club. Hobby : Photography.
