Born 28 Jul 1861, son of Alderman John Hobson, scissor manufacturer.[1]
1882 Aged 21 he took control of the family business, Joseph Hobson and Sons.[2]
1890 Joseph Hobson and Sons was sold to Joseph Rogers and Sons, with A J Hobson becoming a director.[3]
1891 Became a director of William Jessop and Sons
1893 With his brother Wilfred, purchased Thomas Turner and Co of Suffolk Works, Sheffield, and resigned his seat on the board of Joseph Rogers and Sons.[4]
1902 Master Cutler
1904 Appointed to the board of and elected chairman of J. J. Saville and Co Ltd. when a controlling interest was acquired by William Jessop and Sons
1908 Appointed chairman of William Jessop and Sons.[5]
1908 Elected President of Sheffield Chamber of Commerce.[6]
1911 Lord Mayor of Sheffield.[7]
1911 Residing at Esholt, Sheffield: Albert John Hobson (age 49 born Sheffield), Merchant and Manufacturer of Steel Files, Cutlery and Electro Plate, Director of Trading Companies and (?) merchant of Lloyds, London (and widower). With his mother and sister.[8]
1914 Appointed a director of newly registered High Speed Steel Alloys Limited.[9] Elected vice-chairman.
1919 Appointed to the Board of Birmingham Small Arms Company Limited as a result of their purchase of William Jessop and Sons[10]
1919 Recorded as a director of the following companies:- Thomas Turner and Co (Sheffield) Limited - chairman and governing director; Birmingham Small Arms Company Limited; William Jessop and Sons Limited - chairman; J. J. Saville and Co Limited - chairman; High Speed Steel Alloys Limited - vice president (sic).[11]
1920-1921 President of the Association of British Chambers of Commerce.[12]
1922 Knighted in New Year's Honours. [13] Pro-chancellor, University of Sheffield.
1922 Director of Sheffield Cutlery Manufacturers Limited (not to be confused with Sheffield Cutlery Manufacturers' Association).[14]
1923 April 20th. Died at his home, Esholt, Ranmoor, Sheffield.[15]
