1919 A meat processing business was formed in Manchester

1939 Louis C. Edwards and Sons (Manchester) Ltd was incorporated to acquire this business

1962 Listed on the London Stock Exchange

By 1978 the company was involved in the retailing of meat, supplying meat to caterers, as well as canned meat manufacture and frozen meat production.

1978 The name of Louis C. Edwards and Sons (Manchester) Ltd was changed to Argyll Foods Ltd

1979 Gulliver Foods Ltd took a central role in the management of the group. Implemented a policy of expansion by acquisition.

1979 Acquired Yorkshire Biscuits Ltd, Furniss and Co Ltd, biscuit makers of Truro, and Cordon Blue Freezer-Food Centres Ltd. Wholesale catering was discontinued.

1980 Acquired Dalgety Frozen Foods Ltd and Morgan Edwards Ltd, operator of a small retail chain based in Shrewsbury. Frozen meat manufacturing was ended. Acquired Oriel Foods, food distributors, from RCA Finance.

1982 Acquired Allied Suppliers, substantially enlarging the food retailing activities

1983 Argyll Group was formed to hold Argyll Foods Ltd and Amalgamated Distilled Products Ltd[1]

1987 Argyll Foods owned the following: Liptons, Presto, Templeton, Galbraith, Lo-Cost, Cordon Bleu, Mojo, Snowking Frozen Food, Argyll Quality Foods, Gold Crown Foods, and Liverpool Central Oil. The group employs 30,200 persons (11,700 part-time). Chairman is J. G. Gulliver.[2]

1989 Argyll Foods became Argyll Group plc
