HENRY GILBERT BRUCE KNIGHT, B.A., whose untimely death occurred on 1st May 1941, in his thirty-eighth year, was educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he graduated in engineering in 1924. He was the son of Charles A. Knight, M.I.Mech.E., one of the early directors of Messrs. Babcock and Wilcox, Ltd., and after completing a three years' apprenticeship with Messrs. W. H. Allen, Sons and Company, Ltd., of Bedford, he joined his father's firm and was employed from 1929 to 1930 on the erection of Bailey water-wall boilers and equipment, and in the design office.
He then became assistant to the chief estimator of the British Power Signal Company, Ltd., to whom he was responsible for the installation of signals on underground railways. In 1931 he went into the motor business, in which he was engaged for three years. From 1934 to 1936, he held the appointments of technical assistant to the works manager of Messrs. Airspeed, Ltd., aircraft constructors, of Portsmouth, and assistant estimator to the chief draughtsman in the plate and tanks section of Messrs. Edwin Danks and Company (Oldbury), Ltd., Birmingham. He then went into private business until 1938 when he joined General Aircraft, Ltd., of Feltham, where he gained six months' practical experience as an aircraft erector and fitter. Mr. Knight's final appointment was that of technical assistant to the production engineer at the works of Messrs. Short Brothers, Ltd., of Rochester.
He was elected a Graduate of the Institution in 1926 and was transferred to Associate Membership in 1939.
