SYDNEY HERBERT MARCH was export manager for Messrs. Alfred Herbert, whom he joined in 1924. He was well known in the machine tool industry both in this country and the United States, which he visited many times.
He was born in 1871 and served his apprenticeship from 1887 to 1890 with the Birmingham Small Arms and Metal Company.
He subsequently joined the sales staff of Messrs. Charles Churchill and Company.
On the formation of the Churchill Machine Tool Company at Pendleton, Manchester, for which Mr. March was entirely responsible, he became director and general manager. He performed many important war services for the Ministry of Munitions and was a member of the Engineering Commission for the occupied territory of Germany. He was also a member of the first British trade delegation to Soviet Russia.
Mr. March was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1901 and was transferred to Membership in 1912.
He died on 5th May 1933 at his home at Leamington Spa.
