Mr. SAVAGE, after an apprenticeship with [C. D. Holmes|Messrs. C. D. Holmes, Ltd.]], Hull, spent two years in the workshops of Rose Brothers, of Gainsborough, and D. Napier and Sons, of Acton Vale.
In 1908 he accepted a position with Priestman Brothers, to supervise a night shift in their works. When this ceased he entered their drawing office, remaining until 1912. In 1912 he became a draughtsman in the excavator department of Ruston-Proctor, Ltd., later Ruston and Hornsby, Ltd., in which he was appointed Technical Manager (Excavators).
In 1930 the excavator business of Ruston and Hornsby, in conjunction with the Bucyrus-Erie Company of South Milwaukee, became a separate company: Ruston-Bucyrus, Ltd. He was appointed chief engineer and in 1941 was made a director, and still holds both these positions.
