Early years: Born at Marsh Hall Farm, Farnworth, Lancashire, son of Charles Henry Chadwick and Agnes (nee Bradshaw). At the time his father worked for the United Alkali Co., but moved to Thomas Bradford and Co when Roy was 5. The family moved to Urmston when Charles took an admin job at British Westinghouse. Roy undertook a premium apprenticeship at British Westinghouse. In 1911 he was appointed an improver-draughtsman, but he had become increasingly interested in aircraft. He sought an interview with A. V. Roe at Brownsfield Mill, and quickly obtained a position as Roe's assistant, working under Reginald Parrott.[1]
