1884 Speedwell Club Bicycle Exhibition

Third annual Speedwell Club Bicycle and Tricycle Exhibition held at Bingley Hall, Birmingham with more than 500 machines

Last year (1883) some 10,000 tricycles sold and around 10,000 employed in the trade

Exhibitors mentioned:

• Coventry Machinists Co with 36 exhibits including the Cheylesmore tricycle especially suited for lady riders and the Imperial Club racing machines and weighing less than 60 pounds. Also show a spring frame.
• Singer and Co show 30 machines with tricycles with steering on all three wheels
• D. Rudge and Co have works that cover five acres. Their principle machines have a large driving wheel and two small wheels on the other side. These machines weigh 48 pounds and 50 miles has been covered in 3 hours 47 minutes and 40 seconds. Also show the Rotary for ladies and the Coventry Convertible. Their cycles are used by Howell in races.
• Humber, Marriott and Cooper of Beeston show tricycles. Also a 54-inch Humber on which 20.5 miles were covered in an hour; and a 57-inch Humber on which the one, ten, twenty-five and fifty mile championships were won in 1883. Wood of Leicester won the mile race in 2 min 31.4 seconds

• St. George's Foundry Co with the 'Europa' and 'Diana' machines

• Captain Terry shows a convertible boat tricycle which last year he journeyed from London to Paris. The boat is canvas on a metal framework.
