BAKER, Henry Wright, D.SC., M.I.MECH.E., M.I.A.E. Professor of Mechanical Engineering & Director of Laboratories, University of Manchester since 1939. Born 4th November, 1893. Educated at Liverpool College and Manchester University. Was for four years Head of Transport Department, F.W.V.R.C., then became lecturer and subsequently Senior Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at Manchester University. Studied Engineering at Coventry Technical College. Served apprenticeship with Swift Motor Co., Coventry from 1903, and later became London Manager of the firm. Served in R.A.S.C. during 1914 war, as Officer in charge of Main Technical Stores Depot at Shorts Gardens. Later appointed Mechanical Transport Liaison Officer between home and overseas. Was responsible for the issue of "Vocabulary of Miscellaneous Stores." Demobilised with rank of Major. In 1919 joined Mr. E. R. R. Starr to build up this Company which specialises in Motor Insurance. Has been closely associated with the R.A.C. for several years serving on Committees etc. Served for 24 years on the Committee of the Motor and Cycle Trades Benevolent Fund. Hon. Was apprenticed to Bambridge Brothers and in 1919 became partner in firm. Accepted commission in R.A.O.C.(E) and in 1941 posted to Far East. Trained in engineering at Coventry Technical School. In 1929 became draughtsman in Body Office, Hillman Car Co., after apprenticeship with Coventry Ordance Works. Later transferred to Rover, working in Body Office (1931); in Chassis Drawing Office (1932-40); Gas Turbine Design Office (1941-43). Became Section Leader in Rolls-Royce Gas Turbine Design Office in 1944 leaving in 1945 to join present firm. Later worked in Gas Turbine Office, Armstrong Siddeley Motors, Controls Section returning to Allen-Bowden's as Chief Draughtsman in July, 1951. Is Founder and Secretary of Coventry Model Yacht Club. Served during 1914 war in Navy and afterwards specialised in the development of aviation engines and their fuels. Was also responsible for the fuels used in the successful Rolls-Royce Schneider Trophy entrants. Served in R.A.F.V.R., 1919-46. BANKS WARNER, Francis. Managing Director of Fina Petroleum Products Ltd. Born Brentford, 22nd January, 1888. Educated at Friends' School, Saffron Walden. In 1914 became a partner in Lloyds brokerage firm; 1915/19 served with Artists' Rifles, subsequently commissioned with Queen's Westminster Rifles. In 1919 attached to Ministry of Munitions. At end of 1919 entered Oil Industry and formed National Fuel Oil Co., Ltd. In 1927 became General Manager, Cities Beneres Oil Co., Ltd., and in 1939 became Managing Director. The Company changed its name to present title in 1947. At outbreak of war joined Petroleum Board as representative of the Independent Companies; served on the Management Committee and became a Director of the Petroleum Board. On the demerge of the Petroleum Board in 1948 was elected member of the U.K. Petroleum Industry Advisory Committee. Took managership of Clock Garage, Woodville, Swadlincote, in 1938, and bought own business (as above) in 1939. Served during war as Flight Engineer on bombers and finished service as Flight Lieut. in Transport Command. After war took over Jowett agency in three counties. After -completing apprenticeship with Dowlais Iron and Steel Works returned to Italy and joined Fiat's on experimental work concerning racing cars, during the time when they achieved many notable successes.
