BAKER, Henry Wright, D.SC., M.I.MECH.E., M.I.A.E. Professor of Mechanical Engineering & Director of Laboratories, University of Manchester since 1939. Born 4th November, 1893. Educated at Liverpool College and Manchester University. Was for four years Head of Transport Department, F.W.V.R.C., then became lecturer and subsequently Senior Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at Manchester University. Studied Engineering at Coventry Technical College. Served apprenticeship with Swift Motor Co., Coventry from 1903, and later became London Manager of the firm. Served in R.A.S.C. during 1914 war, as Officer in charge of Main Technical Stores Depot at Shorts Gardens. Later appointed Mechanical Transport Liaison Officer between home and overseas. Was responsible for the issue of "Vocabulary of Miscellaneous Stores." Demobilised with rank of Major. In 1919 joined Mr. E. R. R. Starr to build up this Company which specialises in Motor Insurance. Became Section Leader in Rolls-Royce Gas Turbine Design Office in 1944 leaving in 1945 to join present firm. During 1914 war organised preparatory Technical work for the production of the Gnomeengine; neither drawings nor specifications existed in England; an engine was taken from a plane and Daimler's had a copy on test in eight weeks. BERTELLI, Augustus Caesar. Managing Director, Templewood Engineering Co., Ltd., Slough. Born Genoa, 23rd March, 189o. Educated at Cardiff Grammar School. Studied Engineering at Cardiff Technical College. After -completing apprenticeship with Dowlais Iron and Steel Works returned to Italy and joined Fiat's on experimental work concerning racing cars, during the time when they achieved many notable successes. Returned to England and managed Hove ell's Garage, Cardiff until 1914. Joined Hendon Experimental Aircraft Engine Department and worked there during whole of war. Became works manager of Alldays and Onions until 1919 when he became General Manager; during this tune up to 1923 produced and raced Enfield Alldays cars. Then joined Bert Niacallum's Sleeve Valve Engines and produced the Bertelli car in 1924, using .experience gained under Capt. Wolfe Barnato. In 1926 formed the Renwick Bertelli Company which later purchased the Aston Martin Co. From 1928 was Director responsible for the design of the Aston Martin, and racing teams until 1936.
