This category is largely devoted to surviving iron bridges which were constructed before c.1840. However, some extinct bridges are included if they were particularly significant in the development of iron bridges, and some post 1840 bridges are included if they represent significant developments or unique examples.

Some of the entries below are the names of companies rather than bridges. Within those entries will be found examples of the company's bridges, which may be the only identified survival of the company's work.

Early Large Iron Arch Bridges in Context

Prior to the introduction of large wrought iron bridges, a number of bold engineers constructed large cast iron arch bridges. A valuable summary of the large iron arch bridges constructed up to 1830 has been produced by John Burrows, in the context of the bicentenary of Chepstow Bridge.
